In the fall of 2013, I have moved from China to Belgium. By then I spoke only Chinese and French with a bit English. I must live in the Dutch-speaking region. A lot of friends and some members of my family said I’m too crazy.
First of all, like a lot of foreigners, I thought everybody speaks French in Belgium. But it is NOT! Second, I thought since Belgium and France are neighbors and both sides speak French, maybe there is not a lot of cultural differences, but there are MANY.
So I spend my first 3 years to study Flemish (Belgian Dutch) and try to fit myself in by doing some volunteer works. Today I speak almost fluently Dutch, it’s not perfect yet, but I’m still working on it.
I LOVE learning new languages and cultures, this gives me some different way to look at my life and the world. Living in Belgium is quite an eye/mind-open for me. I’m very grateful for that. I even want to learn Spanish in maybe 3-4 years after my Dutch became better. And I have a lot of plans to find my own path here in Belgium and doing volunteer jobs with great people.
To my wonderful family: Thank you all for your support and understanding!
To teachers and social workers, I have met in Belgium: Thank you very much for your kindness and help!
To all my classmates and colleagues I had/have in Belgium: Thank you for your great friendship!
